LEATHER WORK

STRAIGHT JACKET COSTUME

KINK BULL MASK

Kate was approached by Coal Poet Media for a costume make for a music video for a local band called Helldown. The request was a replica of a First World War straight jacket, often used on soldiers returning from the war with shellshock. With a tight budget, Kate recreated the straight jacket using recycled materials, upcycling an old shirt and scrap leather.

This leather kink bull mask was made by Kate for the Richard Burtons Company's production of Women On The Verge of A Nervous Breakdown which was performed at The Sherman Theatre. Using her draping and pattern cutting knowledge, Kate successfully made a mask pattern to construct the mask out of leather. Several paper mock ups of the mask were made before the final pattern was perfected. The mask was constructed by using a combination of bronze rivets, hand stitching and a tiny bit of adhesive.
The mask was also part of a quick change back stage, so the straps that go around the head to secure the mask were made of elastic. Fastenings weren't required on the straps as it had to be very fast quick change, so the elastic was secured to the mask with a strong machine stitch to ensure durability.
